... was Britain's longest single–span bridge of any kind when completed, but it was superseded only 30 years later when a new bridge (now known as the Old Bridge) was built over the River Taff in Pontypridd, Glamorgan. Even by this time, use of Causey Arch had already declined after Tanfield Colliery was destroyed by fire in 1739.
According to Wikipedia, Wood was so afraid that his arch would collapse that he committed suicide; but the bridge still stands today. It has been Grade I listed since 1950, and was restored and reinforced in the 1980s.
